Legislative Budget Request

  1. IFAS Workload Increase Formula- $1.74 Million –Recurring
    • Dollars that will allow IFAS to continue providing the same level of responsiveness even though the needs for our services continue to rise
  2. Development of Citrus Plants Resistant to citrus canker, greening and other disease that challenge sustainable citrus production-$2.0 Million-Recurring
    • Needed are researchers to further develop, screen, and evaluate more plants and genes which contain resistance to canker, greening and other diseases and to develop the technologies and changes in production methods needed to fight the diseases until the resistant strains are developed.
  3. Alternative Energy Initiative-$1.5 Million-Recurring
    • More research is needed on feedstocks and on commercialization.
  4. Statewide Distance Education System & Climate/Weather Decision Making System-$2.4 Million-Requested ($1.4 Million Recurring and $1,201,000 Non-Recurring)
    • IFAS needs to expand and enhance the extension, research and teaching program delivery throughout our statewide network.
    • We also need to develop climate and weather information and decision support systems and tools.
  5. Invasive Species Research and Education Program-$1.24 Million Recurring for 5 years
    • Florida is faced with increasingly diverse and severe infestations of non-native plants and animals. This program will be designed to tackle the invasive at the front end before the problem comes to Florida and to prepare Florida if it does come to this state.
  6. Profitable and Sustainable Alternative Cropping Systems- $1.20 Million Requested; ($825,000 Recurring and $ 375,000 Non-Recurring)
    • Areas of emphasis include small farm cropping systems, alternative agricultural enterprises, and the development of organic food products.
     This request also increases environmental sustainability by reducing the environmental impacts of production practices.
  7. Florida Foods for Optimal Health (Joint Program with FIU)-$1.04 Million (Recurring $705,000 and Non-Recurring $330,000)
    • This program will optimize the health of Floridians through the research, development, and use of foods for health. One focus is to develop foods to meet the shortfall nutrients in diets of specific population groups, such as the elderly and ethnic cultures.
    • The program will formulate foods based on sound science and knowledge of chemical interactions for better functionality of foods.
  8. Solutions for Water Resource Sustainability (campus-wide program) – $4.8M Requested in the Department of Education Budget, Research & Extension -- ($2.476 recurring and $2.3 nonrecurring)
    • This proposal is to develop a long-term, multidisciplinary scientific research and education program aimed at developing technologies and sustainable solutions across natural and man-made threats to Florida’s water resources.
